I want to change my tortoise’s bedding, because it is hard to clean. Right now I have cypress bedding, but I want to change. Just wondering if anyone had any easy-to-clean suggestions! Thanks!

http://www.russiantortoise.org has a great recipe for a general purpose substrate- 50% clean sand and 50% damp coconut coir (Bed-A-Beast and Eco-Earth, for example), mixed by weight (or about 1.5 units of sand per unit of coir.)

It is not perfect- if the coir gets too wet, it turns muddy, and if it dries out, it dehydrates the tortoise. The cost is not too bad, and you can stretch it if you need to by using shredded cypress bark, etc.

Other things to consider if you want something different…

PEBBLES- larger than pea-sized smooth pebbles are good, but also hard to clean.

BARK, of any kind, is usually too coarse and hard. Some bagged or bulk barks are OK- if you would walk on it barefoot, it is probably OK.

PEAT MOSS and most BAGGED SOILS are just too muddy for Russians.

CARPET, TILE, etc. tends to let the droppings sit on the surface and get smeared all over. Tried it, did not like it.

NEWSPAPER is OK for short term use, but offers little traction so the tortoise tends to develop splay-legs. Single-ply corrugated cardboard is better, but requires frequent replacement.

I want to put some bedding in my outdoor dog house to help with the wet and/or cold for my dog, but we have lots of spiders in our back yard and don’t want to attract them into his dog house. Any suggestions?

I have two indoor/outdoor dogs they come and go as they please but they prefer to be outdoors (I have to force them inside when I leave or if it gets too hot/cold) more than anything so I put straw or hay in one because he likes to rearrange it himself. Then in the other house I bought about 6 bathroom rugs and put one in her house and switch it out and wash the other one once a week.

My sister got period blood on my bed (I know it’s gross, that’s why i want to wash it out) so how can I clean that? I don’t know if it makes a difference but my bed sheets are 100% organic cotton. My bed sheets are brown..so I can’t bleach it or anything.. any suggestions??

and I found that these items are all similar,

And, generally, a duvet has a smooth surface unlike a comforter or bedspread which may have a pattern sewn into it. Guess those 2 years in department store linens have finally paid off
